A Tale Of Success: How I Built My Own Shed

First I picked up some books on doityourself DIY construction; there are many books available today that outline just how simple it is to build your own shed! I also visited my local home stores to get ideas for shed construction by studying the models that were already constructed in the store for ideas. The salespeople were particularly helpful in providing suggestions and ideas that helped my vision evolve.

Now Ill admit that I didnt start out to be an architect. Actually I started my search with the idea of saving some money. But slowly I became interested in the unique architecture and character of some shed designs. I was on a mission to prove to my wife that I was intelligent enough to build a shed for our back yard. It became more of a hobby than a simple project. Of course after all of the research my dream of a simple storage shed began to evolve. I now wanted a shed large enough for my riding lawn mower four bicycles a dozen storage tubs auto supplies and more. And I no longer wanted just a big box.

Nope: no ordinary door would do either! I needed a double hinge door with windows; I even wanted decorative flower boxes for my wife to plant her annuals in. Despite all of the additions I managed to save quite a bit of money by doing it myself. I purchased the lumber from a local discount supplier that sells odd lots and overstock items. I saved about 30 by looking for a discount supplier and carrying the wood home in my own truck!

The windows for my shed also came from the discount supplier. My wife was bragging about my adventure to the neighborhood ladies and before long they were coming by to check out my skills. Soon after that the neighborhood husbands were coming over to offer me a helping hand. I definitely needed a helping hand when lifting some heavy parts of the building.

It took me 3 weeks to build my own shed. The final product is functional and looks great. I used books as well as the internet for ideas and direction and it feels really great to be able to say: I built that. I tell everyone that if I can do it you too can build your own shed!
