Is tap water good for you? Hmmm…that’s a good question. Are tap water purifiers necessary in homes that are serviced by public suppliers? That’s another good question. Below you will see the answers and the reasons for them.

Is tap water good for you to drink when it has been chlorinated?

On the one hand chlorination kills bacteria that cause a wide range of waterborne illnesses. On the other chlorine is bad for the digestive system and chlorination causes the release of other chemicals that increase your risk of cancer.

So tap water purifiers are necessary in homes where facilities use chlorine but any publicly treated supply will contain disinfection byproducts because every public treatment facility must disinfect.

Tap water purifiers must contain special filtering media to remove those disinfection byproducts. Simple granular carbon filters will trap chlorine on the surface of the granules but other resins are needed to trap chlorination and other disinfection byproducts.

Numerous research studies conducted over the last few years and published in respected journals have shown that the cancerrisk is a real threat. Exposure to those chemicals primarily THMs doubles the individual’s risk of bladder cancer and increases the risk of colorectal cancer by at least 40. That brings up another question.

Is tap water good for you to bathe or shower in? It is not. Research studies have shown that THM exposure occurs in the shower because the chemicals can be absorbed through the skin and they become airborne along with the steam so we inhale them.

There are only a couple of effective tap water purifiers for shower heads. Most of them reduce the chlorine content by about 50 but do nothing to reduce THMs.

The purification methods that are available for home use include reverse osmosis granular carbon filters carbon/resin blocks sub micron filtration ion exchange and distillation. Distillation and reverse osmosis reduce mineral content but have no effect on chemical contaminants.

Granular carbon as I mentioned above reduces chlorine but carbon/resin blocks trap chlorine THMs and other cancer causing chemicals such as benzene alachlor Atrazine and TCE. Sub micron filtration removes cysts and ion exchange removes lead. All of these steps may be combined in a single unit that is still affordable.

Is tap water good for you drink and shower in if you have the right purification method in your home? Yes. It is good for you and much better for the environment than buying case after case of bottled.

Tap water purifiers are also a more economical solution since buying bottled solely for drinking purposes will cost a family of four over a thousand dollars per year. Besides you cannot use bottled for showering and if you want your food coffee and even your koolaid to taste better you need to filter that water too.

A toilet plunger is designed specifically to direct the force into the waste outlet of the plugged toilet bowl. The business end of a toilet plunger looks sort of like a ball with an opening to fit into the waste outlet of the toilet. One type that is very effective has an accordion like design and is all plastic including the handle.

The way a toilet plunger works is by filling up with water and then pushing that water through the stopped up drain. When unclogging a clogged toilet the idea is to plunge up and down a couple of times so the plunger fills with water and then jam the open end sometimes called a force cone into the waste outlet in the plugged toilet and start plunging. The way to use a closet auger is to pull the handle all the way out insert the business end into the outlet of the toilet bowl that’s plugged and crank it down into the bowl making sure the cable goes into the drain. When the bowl drains flush the toilet while you’re pulling the cable back to help clean the cable. It’s a good idea to flush some toilet paper through a couple of times before you put your auger away just to be sure.

With the growing focus on water conservation more and more communities are requiring toilets that use less water per flush. In spite of the best efforts of the toilet manufacturers to increase performance this is likely to continue to make our most common plumbing problem a plugged toilet. Disinfection Method Problems

If they didnt know for a certainty that THM exposure causes cancer they wouldnt be studying the healthcare costs associated with treating the patients.

Truth in Label?

There are at least three different companies that bear the words pure water filters on their labels or something very similar. They all remove chlorine but only one of them removes THMs.

The PUR pure water filter does not remove THMs or VOCs which are chemical compounds that are known to contaminate the waters around the world. Many of them cause cancer too.

The Ever pure water filters do not remove THMS VOCs or lindane. Its a banned substance throughout the world but at one time it was widely used in agriculture to kill insects. So it is still in the groundwater.

The Aqua pure water filter does not remove MTBE a gasoline additive that seeped into groundwater from leaking tanks and spills and it only certified to remove 95 of the toxic metal lead only 97 of chlorine and only 92 of THMs.

There are other truly pure water filters that stand on their performance data and their reputation among customers rather than advertising on television and in print.
